We had so much fun engaging with other Murder & Mayhem book fans last month while reading Agatha Christie’s The Murder of Roger Ackroyd that we just know you’re all going to love April’s book club pick: Margery Allingham’s Traitor’s Purse!

In fact, Agatha Christie herself has commended Margery Allingham on this work, saying “Margery Allingham stands out like a shining light. And she has another quality, not usually associated with crime stories, elegance.” Written in 1941, this book is also known as a “wartime masterpiece” and “the single best detective story.”
Traitor’s Purse is set in England in the midst of WWII. Celebrated amateur detective Albert Campion wakes up in the hospital, unable to remember anything and accused of attacking a police officer. The one thing he can remember is that he was on a crucial mission on behalf of His Majesty’s government. Fleeing the hospital and the police, Albert struggles desperately to put the pieces together all while England, his mission, and his memory are at stake.
