Death in Paradise began as a television program. Robert Thorogood wrote the first five episodes and the series premiered in November 2011.
It was an overnight success, leading to a second season and prompting Thorogood to write a spin-off novel, A Meditation on Murder. The first book was published in 2014, and three more novels followed over the next four years.
In 2020, Thorogood announced he was writing a new mystery series, this time focusing on an older woman investigating crime. The book was published with positive reviews and was the Booksellers’ Association Book of the Month. Since then, three more novels have followed.
If you’ve been curious about either series, here is every book in Robert Thorogood's Death in Paradise and the Marlow Murder Club series in order.
Robert Thorogood's Death in Paradise Series
A Meditation on Murder
Aslan Kennedy runs a spiritual retreat on Saint Marie, one of the Caribbean’s pristine islands.
When he’s murdered, it seems like an open-and-shut case. After all, he was in a locked room with five people—and one confessed. But something is off and Detective Inspector Richard Poole is determined to find it.
He’s convinced the person who confessed is actually innocent. And once he gets people to stop talking about their auras and start providing alibis, he knows he’ll find the story that doesn’t add up.
He’s on the case, and won’t stop until he’s found the killer.
The Killing of Polly Carter
When supermodel Polly Carter throws herself off a cliff in beautiful Saint Marie, Detective Inspector Poole is called to the scene. Even though she was known as a party girl, her friends insist she never would have killed herself.
And as he investigates the scene, Poole agrees that something isn’t quite right. As he sorts through motives and alibis, Poole determines that not only is the killer part of Polly’s household, but they’re also still on the island.
All he has to do is figure out why someone wanted Polly dead before someone gets away with murder.
Death Knocks Twice
Detective Inspector Richard Poole’s idea of paradise isn’t the sunny island of Saint Marie. It’s drinking at a pub in his drizzly home. But before he can get too disgruntled, a body is found at the historic Beaumont coffee plantation.
Everyone assumes it’s a suicide. After all, the only fingerprints on the weapon belong to the victim. And the room was locked from the inside. But Poole isn’t so sure.
And when a second body shows up, it turns out he’s right. Now, he’s on the hunt for a killer—even if the Beaumont family would rather sweep the whole thing under the rug.
Murder in the Caribbean
Life in paradise isn’t so sunny for Detective Inspector Richard Poole. It’s too hot, his house is a shack, and it’s impossible to find a decent cup of tea.
But when a boat explodes in the harbor and the murderer leaves a ruby at the crime scene, Poole has a full-blown murder investigation on his hands. The deeper they dig, the more secrets they uncover, some going back decades.
Things get even worse when they realize, this explosion may only be the beginning. Poole and his team have to work overtime to catch a killer before there’s another murder to bloody the blue waters of paradise.
Robert Thorogood's The Marlow Murder Club Series
The Marlow Murder Club
77-year-old Judith Potts is living her best life. She can do what she wants, when she wants, and wouldn’t have it any other way.
So, when she witnesses a murder while swimming in the Thames and the police don’t believe her, she takes matters into her own hands. Joined by Suzie and Becks, the women begin investigating the crime on their own.
And when they find another body, they realize they have a serial killer in their midst. Now the only question is whether they can find the murderer before he strikes again.
Death Comes to Marlow
It’s been a delightfully murder-free year for the Marlow Murder Club. And the rest of the year promises to be just as serene. All they have to look forward to is an upcoming wedding.
But just before the ceremony, there’s a loud crash from the groom-to-be’s study. Everyone is shocked to find him crushed beneath his bookshelves.
And since the door was locked from the inside, the police declare it an accident. Only, Judith disagrees.
Once again, it’s up to the trio of women to find a killer before someone else dies.
The Queen of Poisons
When the Mayor of Marlow dies during a town council meeting, the police find traces of poison in his coffee cup. They bring the Marlow Murder Club into their investigation from the start.
Their track record is excellent, and they aren’t beholden to procedural rules. But this time around the case is far more difficult. For one, they can’t figure out a motive.
And they have no idea how the murderer got the poison into the Mayor’s mug in the first place. It's the most difficult case the trio has ever worked.
But they have to work fast because it’s impossible to tell who might be next.
Murder on the Marlow Belle
When Verity Beresford’s husband doesn’t come home, the first person she calls is Judith Potts. Her husband, Oliver, had rented The Marlow Belle, a private pleasure cruiser, for an exclusive Marlow Amateur Dramatic Society committee party.
But no one saw him leave the party or get off the boat. When his body washes on shore with two bullet holes, the Marlow Murder Club jumps into action.
There are plenty of people who might want Oliver dead and things in the Dramatic Society aren’t quite what they seem. What began a fairly easy case of murder gets murky fast.
And if the trio of women can’t solve this case, a killer might escape unscathed.
