The Motor Rally Mystery
British writer Cecil Street was one of the busiest authors of the Golden Age of Detective fiction writing hundreds of mysteries under a variety of pen names.
As John Rhode he penned seventy-two novels featuring ace criminologist Dr Lancelot Priestley, thought by many to be the natural heir to Dr John Thorndyke. This 1933 outing (published in the US as Dr Priestley Lays a Trap) is considered to be one of Rhode’s best.
Priestley is called in by Scotland Yard to investigate the mysterious crash that killed a driver and navigator during an arduous 1000-mile stretch of Britain’s RAC Rally (a real event).
Taking nothing for granted, the doughty doctor retraces the entire route, collecting evidence as he goes until he is finally in a position to reveal the killer.

If Bruno thinks he’s getting away from his day job, however, he’s in for a crashing disappointment. Soon two car fanatics have been murdered and Chief of Police Bruno is on the case.
At the center of the crimes lies a true-life mystery – the whereabouts of the “fourth” Bugatti Type 57 Atlantic. Hailed as the most beautiful car in history only four were ever built, three are in the hands of collectors, and the other disappeared without trace during World War Two.
Valued at around $ 40 million, it’s the sort of car people will kill over—as Bruno discovers.
