Before becoming a New York Times bestselling author, Freida McFadden was a physician in Boston specializing in brain injury. She still is.

But right now, she's also the sovereign of psychological thrillers.

In 2013, McFadden, who has been writing for fun since childhood, self-published her first book, The Devil Wears Scrubs. She expected this to be the extent of her literary career.

Instead, in the interceding decade, McFadden has written 23 books and sold over 6 million copies.

As of June 2024, she surpassed genre giants like James Patterson and John Grisham for the spot of bestselling thriller author in the United States, according to the New York Times

McFadden is known for her twisty and tightly-written psychological thrillers that often start with the pretense of perfection—the perfect partner, the perfect house, the perfect job—only to peel back layer after juicy layer until the shocking truth is revealed.

In 2022, her book The Housemaid became a sensation on TikTok, skyrocketing McFadden to national literary fame and prompting her publisher, Poisoned Pen Press, to release nine of her previously self-published books over the course of the following two years.

McFadden has since spun The Housemaid into a trilogy, with the highly-anticipated third installment, The Housemaid is Watching, released in June 2024. A film production of The Housemaid is scheduled for 2025, directed by Paul Feig and starring Sydney Sweeney and Amanda Seyfried.

Here are eight gripping Freida McFadden books that will keep you guessing until the very end.
