It seems the world can't get enough of police chief Karl Alberg (Rossif Sutherland). Murder in a Small Town premiered last September (2024), and quickly garnered an impressive viewership along with rave reviews.

Shortly after that season ended, the show was renewed for a second. And after nearly a year of waiting, the show's many fans can once again hang out with Karl, Cassandra, and the rest of the people in the small town of Gibsons.

What happened in Season One of Murder in a Small Town?

The show opened with Karl moving to Gibsons after becoming disillusioned with his work as a big-city police officer. He expected his new job to be very different, but discovered that small towns can hide some very dark secrets.

A slew of crimes, requiring Karl's special skill set, made this darkness abundantly clear, but Karl also found a ray of sunshine, as he embarked on a romance with the town librarian, Cassandra Lee (Kristin Kreuk).

How did Season One of Murder in a Small Town end?

After a series of murders, Karl and his team tracked down the killer and took into custody, though not before a nail-biting standoff.

As a couple, Karl and Cassandra have had their own nail-biters, but by the end of the season, they had reconciled. They and the town of Gibsons had had a pretty rough time of it, but things were, at last, looking up.

Maybe.

What is Murder in a Small Town Season Two about?

As season two opens, the town of Gibsons has been hoping to put murder firmly in the past. Good luck with that. A woman is found dead, and her ex-husband—a local guy—is the lead suspect.

We know (and, sadly, the people of Gibson know as well) that this is probably not the only dead body that's going to turn up. We also know that Karl and Cassandra's relationship will not be entirely smooth sailing.

In the previous season, for example, Cassandra told Karl she wanted to run for a seat on the town council. In the new season, she has won that seat. If you think this won't present some complications, you haven't been paying attention!

Who is in Season Two of Murder in a Small Town?

On the other hand, it was such a pleasure, last year, watching them get together, and it's great to see them back again, still smooching, still trying to make things work.

Fans will also be happy to see that Sergeant Sid Sokolowski (Aaron Douglas) is back for the new season, along with Isabella Harbud (Savonna Spracklin), Constable Andy Kendrick (Fritzy-Klevans Destine).

Noah Reid returns as the high-school teacher whose passionate love of art drove him down a very dark road, and the late Malcolm-Jamal Warner—in his very last performance—guest stars as a protective father who is suspected of walking a dark road of his own.

In addition, Marcia Gay Harden, Bethany Brown, Marci T. House, and Joshua Close will all be joining the cast with a slew of guest stars, including Camryn Manheim, Tyler Posey, Jamie Chung, and Sara Canning.

Is the show based on a book?

Murder in a Small Town the TV series is based on a series of books by L.R. Wright. The first book in the series, The Suspect, won the prestigious Edgar Award for Best Mystery Novel of the Year, and forms the basis for the show's first season.

There are nine books in the series in total, which is great news for fans, as it means there are plenty more adventures for Karl and Cassandra et al. All the books, with covers displaying art from the TV show, is now available from Felony & Mayhem Press.
