From January 20th to February 18th, we are blessed with the season of Aquarius!

Though they're also known as the sign of the Water Bearer, don't be fooled—they are an air sign through and through. As such, these individuals can be a little hard to pin down, preferring instead to explore their independence.

Though they come off as aloof and unwilling to indulge in emotional situations, they have a big heart under the surface. Aquariuses place a lot of value on humanitarian efforts, and like to take the lead with new and progressive ideas.

Since Aquariuses love to both take risks and hunker down for intellectual conversations, they're a match made in heaven for a dangerous, puzzling case.

Here are seven of the best mystery and thriller books for Aquarius season!

they all fall down

They All Fall Down

By Rachel Howzell Hall

Miriam Macy is thrilled to get a surprise invitation for a trip of a lifetime. She and six other strangers are being treated to a luxurious getaway on a private island off the coast of Mexico.

With nothing around them but miles and miles of beautiful green water, the serenity of the vacation is shattered when it's revealed the seven of them have been brought to the island under false pretenses. And each of them has a secret they are desperately trying to keep hidden.

Trapped in a not-so-perfect paradise, strange accidents begin to befall the strangers. And one by one, they begin to fall…

This gripping novel will immediately have an Aquarius on edge, as there's nothing they hate more than a broken promise. But these Water Bearers won't be able to resist the things they have in common with the protagonist, who keeps her feelings close to her chest.

Conviction

Conviction

By Denise Mina

It begins as an ordinary day for Anna McDonald. She gets the kids ready for school and queues up a true crime podcast to listen to.

But the cozy and respectable life she built shatters as her husband comes downstairs with an announcement. Suddenly, she's all alone.

Throwing herself into the podcast for a distraction, the twisted tale of a sunken yacht, a murdered family, and a dark conspiracy is far more interesting to her than her own problems. Unfortunately, it turns out this case is one of her problems, too.

She knew one of the victims from before—from the life she worked hard to leave behind. And now she's convinced she knows what actually happened in this deadly case.

An unexpected visitor makes her past collide with her present, sending her on the run and on a desperate quest for the truth.

This book will appeal to an Aquarian's sense of adventure and refusal to ever be bored. Full of thrills, this gripping read also touches on this sign's uncompromising determination to fight for what's right.

The Killings

The Killings

By Clark Howard

Speaking of fighting for what's right, an Aquarius's humanitarian nature makes them a wonderful fit for a social thriller.

A pair of twins become the victims of a horrific murder, and LAPD detectives George Cascade and Ed Fenner are put on the case. As the investigation seems to reveal strange sexual overtones, a young mentally disabled Black man becomes the prime suspect.

The officers quickly find themselves disagreeing with how to proceed with the case, and tensions between them skyrocket. To get to the truth, will they be able to push through their own prejudices?

Upgrade

Upgrade

By Blake Crouch

Logan Ramsay doesn't notice anything different at first. It seems like, at most, he's just a bit sharper—more focused, more energized, more organized.

But he can't stay in denial for long. Something has happened to his brain and body, and the world—and everyone he knows—are starting to look different.

Logan has been given an upgrade; his genome has been hacked. He was targeted because of his own dark past, and because of his twisted family legacy.

But his transformation is just the first step in the larger plan to hack all of humanity. But at what cost?

With his new abilities, Logan is the only one who can bring this awful plan to a halt. In order to do it, however, he may just have to become something more than human.

An Aquarius loves to be original, so while being an evolutionary guinea pig may have it's downsides, they will still preen a bit at the idea of being first. Science fiction crossovers are great for Aquarius readers, as they're always looking toward the future!

Reality TV star Desiree Pierce is found dead in a Bronx's playground the day after her 25th birthday party. Both the police and the media quickly determine the cause of death to be an overdose.

Lena, Desiree's estranged half-sister, knows better. This was no simple tragedy—it was a murder.

First of all, Lena knows Desiree would never willingly travel above 125th Street. The facts just aren't adding up, but no one wants to listen.

While Desiree's party-girl nature—and their difficult father—drove a wedge between the sisters, Lena will stop at nothing to find justice for her now. But that might mean unraveling her family's dark secrets.

This book checks a lot of boxes for Aquariuses, offering, a heap of danger, a healthy amount of social commentary, and a stubborn refusal to wait for anyone to get on the same page before barreling ahead.

The Devotion of Suspect X

By Keigo Higashino

Having finally escaped her abusive husband, Yasuko Hanoaka is relieved to be a divorced single mother. But when Togashi shows up asking for money and threatening Yasuko and her daughter, things quickly spiral out of control.

Togashi ends up dead in Yasuko's apartment. Her neighbor, middle-aged math teacher Ishigami, offers her help, devising a cover story and disposing of the body.

Once Togashi's body is found and identified, it doesn't take long for Detective Kusanagi to pin Yasuko as the prime suspect. However, he can't seem to poke any holes in Yasuko's perfect alibi.

Kusanagi brings in physicist  Dr. Manabu Yukawa for help. Yukawa happened to attend college with Ishigami, and comes to believe the man must have been involved in the murder somehow.

A sharp battle of wits soon unfolds, as Yukawa digs for the truth and Ishigami fights to protect Yasuko.

While Aquariuses shy away from emotional expression, they love a good intellectual deep dive. The mental gymnastics in this great read will have them hooked.

My Sister, the Serial Killer

By Oyinkan Braithwaite

Between the two sisters, Ayoola has always been considered the beautiful one—the favorite child. But Korede suspects she might also be a sociopath.

Ayoola's boyfriend has just died, and he's the third in a row to perish. And his cause of death was Ayoola's knife through his heart.

Luckily for Ayoola, Korede not only knows the best way to clean up blood, but the most discreet way to move a dead body. Plus, she stops Ayoola from posting on Instagram when she should be pretending to be grief-stricken over her “missing” boyfriend.

As for Korede's love life, she's been pining over the kind and handsome doctor at the hospital where she works for years. She's just waiting for the moment he realizes he feels the same way.

But when this perfect doctor asks Korede for her sister's phone number, she must finally reflect on what her sister has become—and how much she's willing to sacrifice to protect her.

The combination of being original and aggressively independent can lead some Aquarians to bend the rules—or even make up their own. Doing the right thing is easy when you get to decide what that is…
