With summer just around the corner, it’s time to spend our days relaxing by the pool and our nights cozied up in the air conditioning with a chilling mystery playing on the screen. Each month Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Prime release a plethora of new TV series and movies that are available to stream. Our job is to round up the best mysteries and thrillers that are soon to be added and give you a heads up on what you need to add to your watchlist.

Joyride

Paul Walker stars as college student Lewis Thomas, who embarks on a cross-country roadtrip with his brother during summer break to pick up his childhood crush Veena. Little do they know, the truck driver, Rusty Nail, is a psychotic murderer, and being the victim of Fuller’s prank triggers a dangerous pursuit of the students by Rusty Nail.

The X-Files

Based on the television series’ extraterrestrial mythology, the film follows agents Mulder and Scully as they investigate the mysterious bombing of a building with no evidence left behind. Undertow

Undertow follows the story of John Munn (Dermot Mulroney) and his two sons who move to Georgia following the death of John’s wife Audrey. When John’s brother Deel surprisingly shows up, the sons are confused as they never even knew of his existence. 

Following a disagreement between John and Deel, John is murdered, and his two boys must run from and survive the hunt of their murderous uncle as he attempts to leave no witnesses behind.

Child's Play

The Peacemaker

Starring Kurt Russell, J. T. Walsh, and Kathleen Quinlan, Breakdown follows the story of a couple whose fun cross-country roadtrip quickly turns into a dangerous situation. When Jeff and Amy Taylor nearly collide with a truck driver named Earl, they become the next targets in Earl’s scheme to take their money. Led by a trucker named Red Barr, they tamper with Jeff and Amy’s car and kidnap Amy. It is up to Jeff to find Amy and keep them alive.

Hard Rain

Panic

Starring William H. Macy, Neve Campbell, Tracey Ullman, John Ritter, and Donald Sutherland, Panic introduces Alex, a seemingly normal married man with a day job. However, Alex is also a hitman, trained by his father Michael (Sutherland) from a young age.

Wanting to leave his jobs behind, Alex begins psychotherapy. But anyone who is involved in the family business knows you can’t easily leave the family business behind. And Michael isn’t about to let Alex go.

The 4th Floor

This 1999 terrifying mystery-thriller follows the story of a young woman named Jane who inherits a brownstone apartment from her deceased aunt and decides to live alone for the first time, against the wishes of her boyfriend. Upon moving in, Jane meets her neighbor Martha Stewart, and Martha tells Jane about all of the residents who live in the building. 

Alice lives on the 4th floor, and Martha describes her as a “hermit.” As Jane continues to move in, she starts noticing how strange some of her neighbors are. The strangeness quickly turns evil and Jane must confront her new enemies.

The Frozen Ground

The Frozen Ground is a crime thriller based on the real-life events of Alaskan serial killer Robert Hansen. When 17-year-old Cindy Paulson is found handcuffed and screaming for help in a motel room, the Anchorage Police Department take her in for questioning and a rape kit. However, because she is a prostitute and lied about her age, police dismiss her story and ignore her plea for help.

APD believes Robert Hansen to be a stand-up member of the community. But Alaskan State Trooper Jack Halcombe (played by Nicholas Cage) doesn’t buy it, and he teams up with Paulson to take Hansen down.

Shutter Island

This neo-noir psychological thriller, based on the book of the same name, stars Leonardo DiCaprio as Deputy US Marshal Edward “Teddy” Daniels. He and his new partner (played by Mark Ruffalo) head to the Ashecliffe Hospital for the criminally insane on Shutter Island to investigate the disappearance of patient Rachel Solando.

Rachel was previously incarcerated for the drowning of her three children. Upon their arrival, Teddy and Chuck find only one clue: a cryptic note in her room stating “The law of 4; who is 67?”
