2023 proved to be an incredibly satisfying year for mystery and thriller movies and television shows. From what we can tell, 2024 promises to be even better!

Whether it’s a sequel, an adaptation, or a story based on true events, there is something for every mystery and thriller lover coming soon to a screen near you.

Fool Me Once—January 1st

We've started the New Year with a bang with a Harlan Coben adaptation. As ex-soldier Maya tries to cope with her husband’s brutal murder, she sees him appear on her daughter’s nanny cam footage.

As she tries to make sense of what this means, she’s drawn into a deadly conspiracy with roots stretching back decades.

Monsieur Spade—January 14th

Legendary detective Sam Spade is enjoying retirement in the picturesque South of France. But when six nuns are murdered at a nearby convent and there are rumors abound of a former adversary making a comeback, life changes dramatically for Spade.

The war may be over, but for Spade, the battle is just be starting.

True Detective: Night Country—January 14th

It’s been four years since we’ve gotten our True Detective fix. Thankfully, the wait is almost over.

When eight scientists disappear from a research facility during the dark winter months in remote Alaska, detectives Evangeline Navarro and Liz Danvers have to find out what happened while battling their own dark secrets.

Death and Other Details—January 16th

Finding herself in the wrong place at the very wrong time, Imogen Scott’s love of murder mysteries takes a dark turn. When she’s accused of being the prime suspect in a locked-room murder mystery, she has to turn to detective Rufus Cotesworth.

He may be the world’s greatest detective, but he’s also a man she despises.

Tokyo Swindlers—July 25th

This energetic Japanese-language heist thriller follows a group of real estate scammers as they attempt to pull off a 10-billion-yen swindle.

A riveting game of cat and mouse ensues between the scammers and the landowners and develops they are targeting, all while the police try to track them down and put a stop to their scheme outright. 

Tokyo Swindlers is based on a 2020 book by Ko Shinjo. An English translation of the same name is set to be released this November

Only Murders in the Building—August 27th

New York City’s favorite amateur sleuths are back for a fourth season this August in this playful whodunnit series that’s captured viewers’ hearts since 2021.

Charles (Steve Martin), Oliver (Martin Short), and Mabel (Selena Gomez) have made quite the name for themselves since they first solved a murder in their apartment building, and this season sees them grappling with all the windfalls and pitfalls of their newfound fame.

They’re still sleuths at heart, though, and this season still features plenty of clues to be hunted and murders to be solved. 

The Perfect Couple—September 5th

Amelia Sacks (Eve Hewson) is set to marry the son of one of the richest families on Nantucket, and with the help of his exacting mother (Nicole Kidman), it looks like the wedding will be just perfect. That’s before one of the guests is murdered.

Everybody’s a suspect in this miniseries adaptation of Elin Hilderbrand’s 2018 novel. This couple’s perfect wedding has just turned into the perfect crime. 

Moonflower Murders—September 15th

Susan Ryeland has finally retired from her job in publishing and shipped off to Crete with her long-time boyfriend, Andreas.

Her literary past catches up to her, however, when the married couple claims a book that she published may hold the clues to their daughter’s recent murder, which they believe is connected to another that happened at their hotel eight years before. 

So resumes the detective career of Susan Ryeland, book-lover and crime-solver, as she solves all manner of mysteries across Britain and beyond in this sequel to the Magpie Murder Series. 

High Potential—September 17th

A normal day at her job as a custodian for her local police department becomes the opportunity of a lifetime when Morgan (Kaitlin Olson), a single mother of three, accidentally helps crack an unsolvable case when she rearranges some evidence as she cleans. 

Turns out Morgan has a singularly high intellect, and is able to see patterns that most other people miss. Stunned by her gift, the police department bring her on to work with veteran by-the-book Detective Karadec.

They may not be an obvious pair, but they sure are an unstoppable one. 

Bad Sisters—November 13th

Everyone has that in-law that they hate, but the Garvey sisters outright cannot stand their sister Grace's verbally abusive husband. So when they opportunity presents itself for him to get him out of the picture, none of them feel particularly guilty about it.

At least, before their sister reacts to his “accidental” death. And she's not ready to let go of it. 

This darkly comedic mystery where the culprits are not only known, but the protagonists, returns to Apple TV+ for its second season this November.

Some Other Woman—January 5th

When Eve Carter is forced to live on a tropical island for her husband’s work, she tries her best to adapt. As she struggles to settle into this new way of life, she starts seeing a woman follow her everywhere.

But as Eve becomes convinced this woman is trying to take over her life, the line between reality and illusion begins to blur. 

The Night They Came Home—January 12th

Based on true events, The Night They Came Home follows the Rufus Buck Gang, a group of Native American outlaws in the late 19th century whose ruthless exploits terrorized Middle America.

But as their violence escalates, local lawmen and Indian police are forced to combine their efforts to stop the fugitives interested in vengeance at any price.

Cult Killer—January 19th

After a detective is murdered and her private investigator mentor is implicated, Cassie Holt refuses to stop investigating until she clears his name. But the man who killed the detective may be more complicated than she ever imagined.

When she stumbles onto a dark conspiracy hiding in plain sight, she may have to partner with the killer to expose the truth.

Force of Nature: The Dry 2—February 8th

Two detectives head into the wild to find out what happened to their informant. She went on a hiking retreat with four other women and never came back.

Sorting through four different versions of events, the two have to find out what really happened—before time runs out.

Out of Darkness—February 9th

A unique survivor thriller set in the Stone Age, Out of Darkness follows six travelers searching for a new home. Surrounded by violent predators and harsh landscapes, they expected their journey to be hard.

They didn’t expect to find other people—people who may be a bigger threat than they ever imagined.

Drive-Away Dolls—February 23rd

Two women down on their luck decide to take a road trip for a fresh start. But when they accidentally end up with some stolen goods, the inept criminals who stole it the first time follow them to try and get it back.

Starring Pedro Pascal, Matt Damon, and Margaret Qualley, this comedy thriller marks the first solo film directed by Ethan Coen.

Sleeping Dogs—March 7th

While undergoing a cutting-edge treatment for Alzheimer’s disease, a former homicide detective comes across new information regarding a decades-old unsolved murder.

But as he reopens the case, it starts to feel like the investigation of the brutal crime is happening for the first time.

Love Lies Bleeding—March 8th

Lou is a reclusive gym manager whose family has criminal ties.

When she falls for Jackie, an ambitious bodybuilder determined to pursue her dreams in Vegas, the two get drawn into a complicated web of romance, dreams, and violent crimes.

Mickey 17—March 29th; Delayed to April 2025

Following his incredible success with Parasite, director and filmmaker Bong Joon-ho is back with an existential sci-fi thriller set in the far reaches of space.

Robert Pattinson stars as the expendable employee sent to colonize the icy Niflheim. Because of the high death rate, he keeps getting cloned with his memories intact.

It’s a decent enough job. Until his entire existence is thrown into question.

Monkey Man—April 5th

A young man (Dev Patel) manages to make a living for himself in an underground fight club. Armed with only his fists and a gorilla mask, he lets himself be beaten senseless nightly by more popular fighters for cash.

After years of suppressed rage and trauma, he snaps, embarking on a violent (and entertaining) rampage against the city’s sinister elite.

Dev Patel not only plays the main character, but also directed the film, which Jordan Peele helped produce. 

Civil War—April 12th

This action-packed film sees an American dystopia unfold through the eyes of a team of military-embedded journalists.

As rebel factions descend upon the White House, their team races to reach Washington, D.C. before a Civil War engulfs America forever.

The Fall Guy—May 3rd

There’s nothing better than Ryan Gosling in his cocky, trying-not-to-die element. His latest movie is a comedic thriller that follows a stuntman past his prime who gets a second chance to work when an A-list star needs a double.

But when the star goes missing, he is determined to find him and keep working. The only problem is the investigation may be more dangerous than any stunt he’s ever had to perform.

The Bikeriders—June 21st

Inspired by a real-life motorcycle club, The Bikeriders takes us back to Chicago in the 1960s.

Through the eyes of several members, we start in their more innocent beginnings and watch as they evolve into a more ruthless gang as the decades pass.

Twisters—July 19th

When her friend Javi (Anthony Ramos) gets his hands on a groundbreaking new tornado tracking system, Kate Cooper (Daisy Edgar Jones) can’t resist the temptation to return to storm-chasing after a destructive encounter with a tornado in her past.

Kate’s worst nightmares about what could happen are soon confirmed as multiple violent storm systems converge over Oklahoma, leaving Kate and her friends to fight for their lives. 

Trap—August 2nd

A father-daughter outing goes horribly haywire in M. Night Shyamalan's latest twisted film. 

When Cooper Abbott takes his teenage daughter, Riley, to a pop concert, he expects the biggest hassle of the night will be the hordes of screaming teenage girls. Things take a turn for the worse when he notices cop cars circling outside and finds exits unexpectedly locked. 

When a security guard confides in him that the venue is on lockdown to trap a serial killer is rumored to be on the premises, Cooper is paralyzed with fear for himself and his daughter—but not for the reasons you'd think. 

Slingshot—August 30th

In this psychological science fiction thriller, astronaut John awakens from a scheduled hibernation cycle on a years-long mission to Titan, a moon of Saturn, to find he is more disoriented than expected.

As the movie progresses through his subsequent hibernation cycles, John slips further and further into madness as the mission to Titan begins to look increasingly doomed. 

Wolfs—September 20th

Two fixers (Brad Pitt, George Clooney) find themselves unexpectedly working together when they are both hired to clean up a high-profile New York official messy mistake.

Two finish the job, these two “lone wolves” are going to have to find a way to make their partnership work—which becomes a trio once the body (Austin Abrams) they’ve been hired to remove turns out not to be dead after all. 

Woman of the Hour—October 11th

In her directorial debut, Anna Kendrick plays Cheryl Bradshaw, an aspiring actress in Los Angeles who auditions to be a contestant on The Dating Game at her agent’s behest.

The gig that was meant to jump-start her dream career could become her worst nightmare when she chooses Bachelor #3—who, unbeknownst to anyone but his victims at the time, is the serial killer Rodney Alcala (Daniel Zovatto). 

The gripping plot of this fictionalized account is made all the more interesting by the fact that the story of Rodney Alcala, a real-life serial killer in the late 1970s, is entirely true.

Bad Genius—October 11th

Based on a 2017 Thai heist thriller of the same name, Bad Genius follows a brilliant scholarship student (Callina Liang) who realizes she can scam her way to popularity by helping her wealthy classmates cheat on their exams.

What starts as a way to make friends rapidly evolves into a complex plot to scam the U.S. college admissions system in this high-stakes new take on a classic subgenre. 

Alto Knights—November 15th; Delayed to March 21, 2025

Robert DeNiro playing not just one, but two roles in an upcoming mob thriller has our full attention.

The film follows the feud between mob bosses Vito Genovese and Frank Costello—both played by DeNiro—in the 1950s, and the war they waged for dominance.

Carry On—December 13th

Young TSA officer Ethan Kopek (Taron Egerton) is blackmailed into letting a dangerous package onto a Christmas Day flight. Now he has a decision to make: race to stop it, or save himself?

This year’s holiday action thriller doesn’t shy away from audiences' deepest fears about going home for the holidays.

Babygirl—December 25th

In this erotic corporate thriller, a high-ranking CEO (Nicole Kidman) enters into a passionate affair with a magnetic but much younger intern (Harris Dickinson), putting her reputation, job, and family on the line.

The film explores the complexity of power dynamics and the many layers of control that two people can exert over each other, all in two salacious, heart-pounding hours.
