Born on July 1, 1892, James M. Cain was raised in a highly educated and literary household. He graduated with a Bachelor of Arts just before he turned eighteen years old.
Though he was bright and embraced a love of literature, he began his career as a ledger clerk at a public utility company. From there he drifted in and out of various careers. He was a high school principal, worked in insurance, and tried to be a Victrola salesman.
However, it wasn't until he became a journalist and started writing that he finally found his calling.
Cain was thirty-six when he wrote his first short story. All his experiences from early jobs to working the crime beat as a journalist and serving in the military, shaped the characters and stories he told, creating his blend of American hardboiled crime fiction.
He began publishing fiction at a steady pace, even landing a job in Hollywood to work on screenplays. Though he never actually produced a successful screenplay, his own works went on to be adapted and were highly regarded.
Throughout his career, he wrote twenty-one novels and novellas, eleven short stories, three plays, and one piece of nonfiction.
If you’ve ever wanted to dive into Cain’s classic hardboiled crime novels, we gathered sixteen books and short story collections to help you get started.
