Since 2013, the Mystery and Romantic Suspense chapter of Romance Writers of America, also known as Kiss of Death, has offered the Daphne du Maurier Award to honor outstanding romantic mystery and suspense literature, both published and unpublished.
The award is named for Daphne du Maurier (1907−1989), an English novelist, playwright, and biographer known for her gothic fiction, historical romance, mysteries, and blends of the three genres.
Her best-known work is Rebecca, a gothic mystery with romantic overtones popularized through numerous film adaptations, including a 1940 adaptation by Alfred Hitchcock.
From cozy mysteries to haunted love affairs to historical romances interwoven with social commentary, these six books are every bit as whodunit as they are will-they-won't-they—and they're all worth the read.
Murder Among the Roses (Maybridge Murder Mysteries Book 1)
A peaceful day in the garden turns hellish for horticultural expert and mother of three Abby Finch when she discovers the bones of a baby buried among the rose bushes.
She calls the police, but she can’t get a hold of her husband, Howard—probably because he’s secretly off with the mistress he got pregnant.
Before Abby has a chance to discover his infidelity, disaster strikes again: Howard’s body is found in the same rose bushes, his throat slashed with Abby’s spade.
Now Abby is the prime suspect, and if she can’t solve this mystery herself, she just may find herself out of the garden and behind bars.
